The PoltavaRegionalMuseum named after Mr. Vasyl’ Krychevs’ky

The Poltava Regional Museum named after Mr. Vasyl’ Krychevs’ky is one of well known symbols of Poltava. Here, one can find information on the Poltava region’s history in the ancient times. The archeology exposition, which is based on the old and modern researches in the region, tells the stories about region’s history in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic time periods, giving us an opportunity to take a look at the things from the Neolithic, Bronze and early Iron ages — starting from the primitive arms by hunters against the mammoths — ending by the exquisite jewelries from the Scythian and later history periods. One exhibition is particularly focused on the Slavic and Old Russian historical time periods. In other regional museum halls, it is possible to learn more on both the Poltava’s Cossacks history and the Poltava province origination and development history. The special exhibitions are devoted to the Ukrainian national revolution in 1917-1920 and the World War II in 1941-1945. It may be interesting to learn more about the «The Treasure of Unique Exhibits» collection, in which  the «raisins» from the different museum collections, including the Japanese, Old-Egyptian, Hetman Danylo Apostol’s, Mr. Mykola Gogol’s, Mr. Vasyl’ Kochubei’s and other art exhibits collections, are presented.

The Poltava Regional Museum — one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. It was founded due to an initiative by the Prof. Vasyl’ Dokuchaev, who was a St. Petersburg’s  famous scientist, in 1891.  He conducted the researches on the soils in the Poltava province in 1888-1892.

At the beginning, the museum had the only three rooms at a country house. Over the time, the old country house was demolished, and then, the new provincial government building was built on its foundation. After the construction completion, the museum obtained a permission to occupy the third floor in 1908. The initial project in the French renaissance style was developed by Mr. Oleksander Shirshov, Poltava’s architect; however, the final project in the Ukrainian modern style by Mr. Vasyl’ Krychevs’ky, an Ukrainian painter and an Ukrainian architect, won the competition mainly thanks to the support by Mr. Sergiy Vasyl’kivs’ky, an Ukrainian painter.

At the World War II in September in 1943, the museum was robbed and burned by the German fascist army. On that time, a big part of the exhibits from the museum collection was destroyed as a result of fire. A small part of the exhibits was evacuated to the City of Tyumen’ and the City of Ufa. The museum’s building was renovated in 1964 only.

At present, there are more than the 300 thousands exhibits in the Poltava regional museum’s funds. The museum’s exposition is divided at the four main divisions: the natural history division, the old history division, the new history division and the 20 century history division. There are a few exposition halls in an every division.

In the museum, there are the following collections: the national embroidery collection, the weaving collection, the carpets collection, the church attributes collection, the archeological collections, the numismatic collections, the Easter decorative eggs super unique collection from XIX-XX centuries, the Old Egyptian collection, the Antique and East arts collections.
