TheEthnologyLaboratoryattheKam’yanets’-Podil’s’lky National University named after Mr. Ivan Ogienko

An educational-scientific laboratory began its operation in September in 1991. Mr. Т. І. Коlotylo, a docent at the Ukrainian literature department, and Mr. V. V. Shegel’s’ky, a senior laboratory technician, started their work to establish a folk studies office in agreement with a directive by Prof. А. О. Kopylov, a rector of the Kam’yanets’-Podil’s’lky state pedagogic institute. Prof. А. G. Philinyuk, a Ph.D. in the history sciences and a former pro-rector of the scientific work, took an active part in the laboratory establishment process.

At the same time, when the exposition hall was under the renovation, a goal oriented search for the household things, the work’s instruments, the crafts’ instruments and the Podillya’s inhabitant’s traditional-employment arts-instruments, has been conducted. During the preparation time period, the four ethnologic expeditions with the teachers’ and students’ participation to the inhabited places in the Kam’yanets’-Podil’s’lky’s district  were organized and conducted. On October 18, 1996, a grand opening of the ethnology laboratory at the Kam’yanets’-Podil’s’lky state pedagogic institute took place, which became considered as a summary of the completed work during the preparation time period (1991–1996).

A study on the Podillya’s folk culture in context of the Ukraine national revival is commonly regarded as a main research theme by the scientists at the laboratory.

Among the work directions: the educational-methodical work, the educational-teaching work, the scientific-investigative work, the search making work – the collection creation work, the educational activities work, the folk-studies information-base compilation work.

In terms of the education, the ethnology laboratory operates as an auditorium for the educational subjects’ studies with the focus on the folk-studies for the Ukrainian philology and journalism faculty’s students. The students have an opportunity to make not only the theoretical but also practical studies, looking at the various visual evidences, the folk crafts instruments, and the traditional household things/crafts, and the ethnicity viewings.

Today, the ethnological researches by the ethnology laboratory are being done at more than two hundreds inhabited places in the Khmel’nitsky’s, Vinnytsia’s and Ternopil’s regions. The Bar’s potters products were included into the laboratory’s collection’s funds as a result of the ethnological expedition researches; and they are qualified as the main exhibits at the exhibitions’ expositions.

Prof. Valery Vasylyovuch Shegel’s’ky, Ph.D. in the Philology science, a senior lector at the department of the Ukrainian literature and comparative studies, a member of the Ukrainian national local history studies association, is a head of the ethnology laboratory.
