This is a museum under an open sky, which was founded in 1971. The museum stores, researches and popularizes the folk culture, the folk architecture and the ancient household traditions in the Ukrainian Western regions since its establishment time up to the present time. During this time period, the museum’s fund’s collection has been created, including near the 22 thousands exhibits and above the 100 big architecture objects, among them a unique and biggest collection of the sacral buildings in Europe. The famous personalities were involved into the cultural heritage preservation process: Mr. Andriy Sheptyts’ky, Mr. Klimenty Sheptyts’ky, Mr. Mykhailo Dragan, Mr. Ilarion Sventsits’ky, Mr. Olexandr Bodrevych-Buts’, Mr. Arkhyp Danylyuk and many others. The L’viv’s skansen is situated at the 36,6 hectares territory.
The L’viv’s skansen (a folk name for an open-air museum of folk architecture and life) and the Shevchenko’s grove (a folk name) are considered to be the cultural organizations, the historical centers of national traditions revival, the best recreational places for the L’viv’s residents free time spending, and they are included into a big number of the Ukrainian and European tourist destinations. The museum stores the collections and conducts the researches in L’viv since the official opening time up to the present time.
During the museum’s walking tour, the visitors walk through the micro-villages, which recreate the features of the ethnographic regions or historical-ethnographic groups in the Boikivshyna’s, Lemkivshyna’s, Hutsul’shyna’s, Bukovyna’s, Pokuttya’s, Podillya’s, Zakarpattya’s, L’viv’s regions in Ukraine.
The fund’s collection has more than the 22 thousands of exhibits, which were collected during the time of expeditions, bought or obtained from the gifts’ presenters. They are divided into the following 17 fund’s collection groups: the hunting and fishing; the beekeeping; the sculpture; the music instruments; the measurement devices; the instruments; the furniture; the painting, iconography; the church equipment; the Easter egg paintings (more than the 850 folk and authors’ Easter eggs paintings); the agricultural equipment; the manuscripts, the old books; weaving instruments; the artistic industries; the ceramics (specifically, a collection of unique tiles made by Mr. Baranyuk, Mr. Bakhmatyuk, and Mr. Kosak (around the 500 samples), the faience plates collection (a biggest collection in Ukraine — above the 600 units), the household things; the textiles, the clothes (a fullest collection of the Zhydachiv’s traditional embroidery clothes in Ukraine).
In the museum fund’s ceramics collection, the Bar’s potters-masters’ ancient products’ samples take an important place, among which there is a unique jar with the birds’ picture (it was found during an ethnographic expedition to the Village of Molodove in the Region of Chernivtsi). It wasn’t possible to discover the similar jars in the other museums’ and private collections so far.
